The Seven Chakras

The Seven Chakras are the seven main energy points running from the base of the spine to the top of the head. These main energy points are said to affect your physical, mental and spiritual well-being. When a chakra energy point becomes “blocked”, we may feel the effects manifest in any of these aspects.

Chakra (or Cakra) translates to “wheel” in Sanskrit and has origins in India dating back to between 1500 and 500 BC, possibly even earlier. It is believed that there are about 114 chakras, but the main focus is often on the most prominent seven: The Root, The Sacral, The Solar Plexus, The Heart, The Throat, The Third Eye and The Crown Chakra.

The Root Chakra (Muladhara) – The First Chakra: Located at the base of the spine. It is primarily depicted as a deep red or pink. This chakra is also known as the earth element chakra and is associated with grounding and stability.

The Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) – The Second Chakra: Located below the navel. It is primarily depicted as a vibrant or red-orange colour. This chakra is associated with the water element and governs sensuality and creativity.

The Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) – The Third Chakra: Located between the navel and chest. It is primarily depicted  as yellow, or, as it is associated with the fire element, yellowish-red. This chakra is the chakra of self-esteem, confidence and willpower.

The Heart Chakra (Anahata) – The Fourth Chakra: Located near the heart. This chakra is a vibrant green colour. This chakra represents where the physical and spiritual combine in the body. It is associated with love, wellbeing and our emotions.

The Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) – The Fifth Chakra: Located in the centre of the throat. This chakra is often depicted as a calm blue colour. It is associated with communication and truth.

The Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) – The Sixth Chakra: Located in the centre of the forehead. It is depicted as indigo, or blue-purple. This chakra is associated with clairvoyance, intuition and imagination.

The Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) – The Seventh Chakra: Located at the top of the head. This chakra is often depicted as either white or deep purple. The highest chakra, the crown chakra represents spirituality and a higher state of consciousness.
